Western Sand Cherry (Prunus besseyi) 'Pawnee Buttes' is a naturally selected cultivar found growing in northeastern Colorado and introduced by Plant Select. This variety features a groundcover growth habit, while maintaining the early white blossoms, attractive green summer foliage, red/purple fall foliage, and dark, edible fruits characteristic of the native species. Use 'Pawnee Buttes' as a groundcover in a sunny bed or border, rock garden, or edge of a woodland or shade garden. Give this plant plenty of room to spread out. Only requires occasional hand pruning to maintain a desirable shape. It is tolerant of urban pollution.
