Tenpetal Blazingstar or Candleflower (Mentzelia decapitata) is a distinctive Utah native wildflower that looks lovely in dry landscapes. Its upright stems are covered in finely textured, gray-green foliage, culminating in bright white, star-shaped flowers with yellow centers that provide a beautiful contrast. The abundant flowers have an intricate appearance resembling cactus flowers and open in the evening before closing the next morning all summer. Tenpetal Blazingstar is a highly appealing addition to rock gardens, xeric plantings, naturalistic landscapes, and moon gardens. Well adapted to dry, sunny conditions, Tenpetal Blazingstar is an excellent choice for adding seasonal color and fine texture without demanding much water, while its flowers provide an important nectar and pollen source for native bees and other night pollinators. This plant is a biannual to short-lived perennial and will remain in a planting by self-seeding. It doesn't compete well with thickly planted garden beds and rich soil, preferring to grow in poor soils with less nutrients and competition. It can handle some supplemental irrigation if the soil is poor and well-drained.
