Ponderosa Pine (Pinus ponderosa) 'Dixie' is an adorable miniature selection of the native Ponderosa found near Bryce Canyon, Utah. 'Dixie' features very tight growth and the long needles characteristic of the species with excellent green color. Use this petite Ponderosa to add year-round interest to garden beds and borders, rock gardens, Japanese style gardens, or the sunny area just outside of woodland or shade gardens. For best results, plant in sandy or loam soil with good drainage.

  • Irrigation Requirement: Very Low (Water to Establish) or Low (1/2" every 10-14 days). Make sure the tree is well established before weaning off of supplemental irrigation. Only use regular supplemental irrigation if the soil is well-draining. 

    Mature Size: Extremely slow-growing, will be approximately 2.5' tall and 2' wide after 10 years. 

    Hardiness Zone: 4 - 8

    Light Requirement: Full Sun

    Deer Resistant: Yes, somewhat

    Salt Tolerant: Moderately

    Soils: Will do best in well-drained sandy or loam soils. 

  • Plants in the Pinus genus are known host plants for 150 pollinators in northern Utah. Ponderosa Pine will also provide habitat and seeds for birds and small animals.
