Largeleaf Avens (Geum macrophyllum) is a Utah native that is perfectly suited to woodland settings, bringing life and color to shady gardens. In late spring, airy stems rise above the foliage carrying small, sunny yellow flowers. However, it's not the flowers that steal the show for this plant, but the foliage. Lush mounds of large, softly textured green leaves create a full, leafy presence that works beautifully as a living ground layer beneath trees or along shaded borders, especially when paired with other shade tolerant perennials and shrubs. The more shade the plant is in, the larger the leaves grow. Use Largeleaf Avens to provide texture, leaf color, and interest to shaded garden beds and borders, woodland plantings, in moist meadows, or along waterways. It can also handle seasonal flooding, making it appropriate for rain gardens.
