Hot Rocks Penstemon (Penstemon deustus) is a tough native perennial that thrives where the sun is intense and the soil is dry and poor. Low mounds of glossy green semi-evergreen foliage are topped in late spring and early summer with clusters of creamy white to pale yellow flowers that create a beautiful contrast against rocky landscapes or landscape boulders. This exceptionally drought-tolerant penstemon is perfectly suited for rock gardens, water-wise garden beds and borders, Mediterranean plantings, rock walls, and other tough, exposed sites. Its nectar-rich blooms attract native bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, while its compact habit pairs beautifully with sages, buckwheats, native grasses, and other drought-adapted wildflowers. Spent flowers can be deadheaded to maintain a neater appearance when blooming is done.
