Green Ephedra (Ephedra viridis), also known as Mormon Tea, is a uniquely beautiful evergreen shrub. Instead of traditional leaves, it features striking blue-green stems that create fine texture and year-round visual interest, making it a standout accent in xeriscapes and rock gardens. Exceptionally drought tolerant, this tough shrub thrives in hot, dry conditions and poor, rocky soils where many other plants struggle. Its understated flowers are followed by attractive seed structures that provide further interest and support native wildlife. With its sculptural form, distinctive color, and remarkable resilience, Mormon Tea is an excellent addition to dry garden beds and borders, rock gardens, Mediterranean style plantings, and naturalistic designs. It is also a common addition to medicinal gardens and can be used in tonics or teas as a decongestant.
