Giant Sacaton Grass (Sporobolus wrightii) 'Windbreaker' is the largest of all native grasses, growing to an enormous 8-10' tall at maturity, even taller than Pampas Grass! This impressive giant was originally bred as a non-woody windbreak alternative for agricultural fields and makes a wonderful windbreak or privacy screen when planted together, or truly spectacular specimen plant when planted alone. Tall, narrow leaves grow in a clump with an open and sometimes draping form. Large, showy blooms appear in late-summer and create a misty appearance, looking especially impressive in early morning and late evening light. But the best part about Giant Sacaton grass? It's incredible versatility! Grow this plant in any soil type, even hard clay that is not well draining, and any watering schedule from xeric (with occassional supplemental watering if the summer is dry) to traditional landscape watering and fertilizer. Use this plant as an alternative to Old World large grasses, some of which have shown invasive tendancies. 'Windbreaker' is moderately tolerant of urban pollution and city sites.
