Black Cottonwood (Populus trichocarpa) is a majestic native tree prized for its fast growth, broad canopy, and distinctive presence along streams, rivers, and other moist landscapes. Its large, heart-shaped green leaves shimmer in the slightest breeze, creating a beautiful, cooling canopy through the growing season before turning golden-yellow in fall. With its impressive stature and strong, upright growth, Black Cottonwood makes a striking choice for larger properties and naturalized landscapes where ample space and moisture are available. As an important riparian species, it provides valuable habitat and nesting sites for birds, supports a wide range of native insects, and contributes to healthy streamside ecosystems. Due to its large size, weaker wood, extensive root system and the cotton from female trees in the spring, it is recommended that this tree only be used for extensive properties with natural streams or rivers, restoration, etc.
